Successful Substance Abuse Recovery
For those who are battling against an addiction that has destroyed or is threatening to destroy their family and
professional lives, it can be hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
Despite such difficulty, substance abusers have a definite hope of turning their lives around. Substance abuse
recovery is a long process, comprising years of effort and real self-belief but there are tangible steps that can
help those recovering to map their progress.
The experts will tell you that facing up to the fact they have a problem is the first significant step on the
road to recovery for any drug addict. However, it can sometimes only get more difficult. Often the addict is
already suffering from low self-esteem, which leaves them feeling like they have an even higher mountain to
climb.
But a complete substance abuse recovery is possible when a set of rules are observed and a consistent effort is
put in. Usually, these are simple steps that an addict refuses to admit, such as seeking help, accepting that help,
applying themselves to a plan and setting a new daily routine by it.
There are two principle methods of seeking to recover from drug abuse: turning to the professionals and going
the self-help route. Going to the professionals would seem like the obvious choice but there can be circumstances
that work against choosing that avenue, such as cost or a need for discretion. Self-help can see the recovering
addict turn to books written by experts, offering definite steps towards recovery. The addict then tries to follow
these steps.
However, it can also involve turning to passive social or community organizations where the addict can attend
regular meetings voluntarily, with no instruction from a doctor or judge. While traditionally these involved
meeting in local halls or community centers, a growing number are now available on the internet, where recovering
addicts can converse and support each other online.
Of course, the preferred route is to turn to the professionals, despite the costs that can be involved. Often,
the treatment that an addict receives is tailor-made to suit them, with residential rehabilitation centers allowing
patients to stay for prolonged periods of time. This can prove very expensive, so alternative professional help is
more practical. This can involve community organizations where professional doctors and counselors donate their
time and expertise, allowing those unable to afford professional services and road towards recovery.
In most cases, the steps which need to be taken to enjoy a successful recovery are underestimated and, as time
ticks on, frustration mounts and anxiety grows, making the task harder still. What is common in all successful
substance abuse recoveries is the existence of a network of support around the recovering addict. Sometimes it
comprises family and friends, sometimes fellow recovering addicts but always they have someone to turn to.
