What to
Consider when Choosing a Rehab Treatment Center
When it comes to treatment for drug or alcohol addiction, it
seems that almost everyone checks themselves into a rehab
treatment center.
There is no secret as to why, since it is in a rehab center
that someone looking to beat an addiction, and battle through
the difficult stages that a full recovery involves, can hide
themselves away in, far from the temptations of the outside
world. But just how good a move is it and are rehab treatment
centers really the answer to every addict’s problems?
The first idea that springs to mind when we think of rehab
is money. To most of us, a rehab treatment center is plush and
exclusive, with most of its patients either rich or famous -
but not all of them are like the Betty Ford Clinic. There are a
multitude of types to choose from, starting with the very
costly and going down to the ‘community houses’s that survive
mainly due to the fact that they are heavily subsidized by
either a regional or national government.
Choosing the right one, one that can give the best possible
treatment, is down to a list of criteria that anyone seeking a
treatment center should stick by. After all, just because a
rehab treatment center is expensive does not mean that it can
guarantee a recovery.
First of all, are all of the necessary licensing
requirements and required documentation in order? All rehab
treatment centers are governed by the strictest laws and
regulations to ensure that their patients receive the best
possible help. All of the treating and counseling staff should
be certified professionals.
Secondly, the treatment programs can vary dramatically
according to the philosophies of the individual centers. Some
may view family contact as a distraction or hindrance to
recovery, while others will welcome family support. Be sure
what type of treatment is on offer and, also, if it is based on
the highly popular 12-Step plan.
Inpatient or residential programs can be long-term or
short-term. Longer-term treatment programs often have higher
success rates but remember that outpatient programs can also be
successful. Outpatients are also known as ‘day patients’ since
they come in the morning and go home in the evening. There
should be no difference in treatment to either inpatients or
outpatients, but the question is which status would suit the
patient better.
The process of recovering from an addiction is simply too
personal for anyone to say that you are certain to recover in
one center and not another. In most cases, it is the feeling of
support and comfort that will inspire a patient to work harder
towards recovery, whether it is in a house with little more
than a front yard and 10 other patients or in a hide-away
‘resort’ with spas, gymnasium and massage rooms, far from the
realities of life.
What is important is that all of the options are checked out
before a decision is made. The rehab treatment center is the
first step on the way to a full recovery, and with the right
the advice, treatment and support, it can be the best
step.
